P007 → SHALL WE DANCE? SHALL WE TALK!
Dance carries multiple meanings: physical and sensual; individual and social; political and ceremonial. A ballroom offers more than just entertainment—it facilitates a relationship of quick acquaintance and swift separation among strangers, embodying a modern experience that is "accidental, transitional, and ephemeral."
Do people still dance socially today? How are ballrooms operating now? Why have young people stopped going to dance halls?
“Shall We Dance? Shall We Talk!” explores the reconstruction of social dance post-pandemic, examining dance as a symbol of self-liberation and social language. With social distancing becoming the norm, the way people interact and connect has changed. By analyzing dance movements, tracking the body's center of gravity, and using programming to visualize interaction patterns, this project examines the significance of dance in the new social landscape and its potential to reshape human relationships.
“Shall We Dance? Shall We Talk!”
The human body's center of gravity
is located 7 centimeters in front of the upper edge of the third sacral vertebra.
I analyzed 156 social dance movements, visualized body language,
and tracked the movement trajectory of the body's center of gravity.
The project culminates in a hand-flipped book that seamlessly merges the fluidity of movement with the tangible form of print. Rooted in an exploration of the interplay between books and the human body, the design emphasizes experience and interaction. By animating two figures dancing in unison and placing them on opposite sides of the book (A and B), the act of flipping through the pages transforms into a dynamic visual encounter—one that simulates the rhythm and synchrony of a shared dance.
