P008 → Through the Fridge Door
2022
A refrigerator is more than just a storage space for food—it is a symbol of security. This project explores how hoarding emerges as an instinctive response to uncertainty and extends into a metaphysical discussion of security, linking individual psychology to broader social conditions.
Through visual research, experimental installations, and interactive design, this project examines the dynamic balance between the refrigerator and its surrounding environment. By analyzing the correlation between hoarding behavior and external instability, it invites the audience to reflect on how to find their own point of stability in a world that feels increasingly out of balance.
Utilizing Touch Designer, visual experiments incorporating out-of-focus effects and temporal value shifts illustrate the gradual decay of these stored items as a result of excessive hoarding. This process serves as a metaphor for the erosion of perceived security, highlighting the psychological impact of over-accumulation in response to external uncertainties.
The project translates hoarding anxiety into an interactive installation. A deconstructed refrigerator, augmented with an Arduino-controlled air pump and touch-sensitive components, visualizes the effects of excessive storage. Using real-time inflation and deflation, the installation represents fluctuating feelings of security and insecurity. Users can interact with the refrigerator by shaking its handle to receive a curated shopping list, encouraging mindful consumption over panic-driven accumulation.
